Where does altruism come from?

Roy Hattersley is a confirmed atheist yet has a fascination with the Christian faith that has led him to produce two excellent books on Wesley and Booth. In this article in the Guardian, he asks what drives altruism and why it is that when disaster strikes atheists are often not driven to help?
